Benjamin Banneker – November 9, 1731 – October 9, 1806
- A free, self-taught, African-American mathematician, astronomer, almanac author, and farmer.
- At the 15, he took over the family farm and created an irrigation system to control the flow of water to the crops.
- In the 1750s, he invented the first clock in America. It was this invention that put this talent in display for the country.
- Responsible for surveying the territory for construction of the nation’s capital in 1791 after the lead architect quit.
- Authored commercially successful serious of the almanacs.
- Corresponded with Thomas Jefferson, drafter of the United States Declaration of Independence, on the topics of slavery and racial equality.
Madam C.J. Walker – December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919
- Entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political/social activist.
- First Black female self-made millionaire in America.
- World’s most successful female entrepreneur of her time, and I’ve of the most successful African-Americans.
- Made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of beauty and hair products for Black women.
- Made financial donations to numerous organizations and became a patron of the arts.
- In 1993, inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca, New York.
